Portal and List-View Highlighting that Alternates by Data Groups !
|
|
Recent versions of FileMaker include the ability to set up alternate row shading for portals and alternate record (body) shading for list layouts. But if you want the shading to differentiate records by anything other than odds and evens, you'll need to rooll-your-own. That's where this technique comes in.
The NightWing Group Shading demo uses a simple file structure in which tasks for projects have been assigned to teams. Since there can be multiple tasks for a given project, it is usefulty to be able to see at a glance where the listed tasks for one project end and tasks for another project begin. How? By changing the row shading.
The picture below shows the alternating shading applied to grouped data in a portal. However the demo also includes a dynamic group shading for sorted lists (unsorted, the shading as straight odds and evens alternative, but sort by group and the group shading is applied.
Although we've used the example of tasks, projects and teams, any three-way data split may benefit from this technique. Days of a person's calendar, Assignments of a styudent's course. The technique is very adaptable
The technique requires FileMaker v8.0 or later and is suitable for implementation in both stand-alone and hosted solutions. This demo file is unlocked and is provided password-free, by courtesy of NightWing Enterprises.
