Users familiar with internet browsers appreciate the ability to use a "back" button to retrace their steps. Unlike the internet, however, database solutions are more than just a series of pages. FileMaker presents the user with layouts on which multiple records may be viewed, so a method enabling the user to retrace steps must address both layout and record navigation.
The technique shown here builds as an array, a history of both record and layout changes occurring as the user navigates the solution. This is captured automatically to a variable called $$StepTrace, updating as the screen refreshes regardless of the means of navigation the user employs.
To support the back button functionality allowing users to retrace their steps, a star TOG is required, from which a GTRR can locate records matching their primary keys retrieved from the $$StepTrace array. With the supporting TOG, a single script and a button on each layout, stepping back through records and layouts in a multi-table solution is straightforward.
