A common requirement for multi-user database systems is an implementation where each user sees only the relevant records - and this is commonly achieved using FileMaker's Record Level Access (RLA) privilege constraint assigned to the Privilege Set associated with the user's login Account. However this still leaves the user looking at a lot of records that display <no access> flags in all the fields. Sometimes this is merely a nuisance, but in many cases it is undesirable.
This demo shows a technique for filtering the displayed records so that different users can navigate through the file performing finds, displaying lists and changing layouts without encountering records that are not meant for their eyes. In addition to RLA settings, the technique harnesses Custom Menus* and Script Triggers to seamlessly transition between user account views, even if provision is made for users to relogin without closing and reopening the solution.
While there are several components to the technique shown in this example (scripts, Privilege settings, OnLayoutLoad script triggers) it can nevertheless be adapted readily for implementation in a variety of solutions and to serve within a range of different scenarios.
This demo file is unlocked and password-free, compliments of NightWing Enterprises. The use of this technique is free for private and educational purposes. Use for business or commercial applications is subject to license (pricing on request).
