The Pawn Cocktail sculpture is an original artwork that draws upon the well-known symbolism of the game of chess to express both concern and sympathy for the way in which the lives of ordinary folk are overshadowed and swept up in the events of war.
This hand-turned and hand carved sculpture develops the chess analogy (wherein the chess board represents a battlefield and the pawn represents an ordinary foot soldier), extending the chess board into three dimensions. Here, the terrain has risen up like a stormy sea to produce dangerous peaks, and explodes upwards into a vortex which takes the form of a cocktail glass within which the hapless pawns are trapped. The standards of the opposing armies (transmuted into ‘swizzle sticks’) depict the moon and stars respectively, signifying the remoteness of the issues of war from the lives, loves, everyday concerns and fates of so many of the human players in the drama of armed conflict.
The main body of this piece (board and vessel) is made from alternate blocks of Queensland Walnut and European Beech, while the pawn pieces and swizzle battle-flags are made from Monash Holly and Nigerian Danta (the stars and moon insignia are solid insets that pass through and appear in mirror image on each side of the swizzlers).
