Summoning Pipe
actual size: 135mm (H)  x  35mm (W)  x  32mm (D)

Made individually by hand, these sculpted instruments
make a variable-register single pitch note. The timbre of
the sound produced is governed by the contour of the
flare of the stem, as is the register, while the pitch is
influenced also by the length of the stem. The shaping
of the stem gives the sound a rich and warm character and
provides each pipe with its own recognisable aural signature.

The hand-carved mouthpieces fitted to the NightWing pipes
utilise the fipple-flute sounding principle, as is believed to
have been used by ancient forest folk of Celtic lore
(who were reputed to use aerophones, perhaps
resembling these, to communicate secret
signals across the woodlands).
